CULTURAL ORIENTATIONS OF THE ROMANIAN UNIVERSITY IN THE INTERWAR PERIOD

DUE TO DEFECTS IN THE ROMANIAN SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION, UNIVERSITIES IN WESTERN EUROPE HAVE LONG HELD THE MONOPOLY ON ELITE INTELLECTUAL TRAINING. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT NEARLY ALL POLITICAL AND CULTURAL ELITE IN ROMANIA, INCLUDING ACADEMICS, SEN IOR OFFICIALS, MINISTERS AND MEMBERS OF MINISTERIAL CABINETS WERE EDUCATED ABROAD DURING THE LATE 19 TH AND THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20 TH CENTURIES. AS A RESULT, WESTERN MODELS HAVE BEEN THE SOURCES OF TRANSFORMATION AND EVOLUTION IN ROMANIAN SOCIETY AND THE INFLUENCE OF THESE IDEAS HAS CHANGED THE LOOK AND SPIRIT OF NATIONAL CULTURE. THE FORMATION OF THE ROMANIAN INTELLECTUAL IN THE FIRST PART OF THE 20 TH CENTURY SHOWS INFLUENCE FROM UNIVERSITIES IN FRANCE, GERMANY AND AUSTRIA, WITH ACADEMIC CENTERS IN ITALY, HUNGARY, BELGIUM, AND SWITZERLAND FOLLOWING BEHIND. INFLUENCE IS SEEN RARELY FROM ESTABLISHMENTS IN SPAIN, GREECE AND ENGLAND. FRENCH AND GERMAN CENTERS HAVE HELD PRIMACY BY EDUCATING ROMANIANS IN MEDICAL TRAINING CENTERS, AND WITH DOCTORATE P ROGRAMS IN LITERATURE, HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY, THEOLOGY, LAW AND THE SCIENCES. IN CONCLUSION, THROUGH THE GREAT PERSONALITIES OF THE TIME, IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF THE ORGANIZATION AND OPERATION OF WESTERN SYSTEMS WERE APPLIED IN ROMANIA.
