EARLY FLUID REPLACEMENT IN BOWEL OBSTRUCTION – EFFECTS ON MORTALITY

Abstract
ACUTE INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION OCCURS WHENEVER THERE IS ANY INTERRUPTION IN THE NORMAL FLOW OF INTESTINAL CONTENTS. MANAGEMENT OF INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION IS AIMED TO PRIMARILY CORRECT THE PHYSIOPATHOLOGIC CHANGES CAUSED BY THE OBSTRUCTION ITSEL F AND THEN, IF POS SIBLE, REMOVING THE SOURCE OF OBSTRUCTION. THE FORMER THERAPEUTIC ACTION IS ACCOMPLISHED BY INTRAVENOUS FLUID R ESUSCITATION WITH INTRAVASCULAR ISOTONIC FLUIDS. EARLY FLUID REPLACEMENT PROVED AN IMPORTANT FACTOR TO REDUCE POSTOPERATIVE MOR TALITY, ESPECIALLY IN THE ELDER LY. CHRYSTALLOID SOLUTIONS SEEM TO BE THE BEST OPTION FOR VOLEMIC INITIAL RESUSCITATION.
