Abstract
HISTORICAL MASONRY CONSTRUCTIONS HAVE STRUCTURAL DEFICIENCIES AND ARE PRONE TO BRITTLE FAILURES UNDER SEISMIC AND STATIC OVERLOADS. THUS, RETROFIT AND STRENGTHENING OF THIS CATEGORY OF CONSTRUCTION IN ORDER TO FURNISH STRUCTURAL DUCTILITY AND ADDITIONAL STRENGTH IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE. THE RECENT RESEARCH CONCLUDED THAT FIBER REINFORCED POLYMER COMPOSITES IS AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION AT BOTH STRUCTURAL AND AESTHETIC LEVEL. THE CURRENT PAPER PRESENTS A SUMMARY OF PROBLEMS THAT OCCUR WHEN USING THESE MATERIALS TO THE STRENGTHENING OF MASONRY STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS, EMPHASIZING THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE EFFICIENCY OF THESE SYSTEMS. IN THE ABSENCE OF TECHNIC AL REGULATIONS ON THE USE OF THESE MATERIALS IN ROMANIA (COMPUTING ELEMENTS AND DETAILS OF INSTALLATION), WILL BE PRESENT THE MAIN STEPS OF AN ALGORITHM FOR MASONRY COLUMNS CONFINED WITH COMPOSITES MEMBRANES, THAT EXIST IN ITALIAN STANDARD CNR -DT 200/2004 . IN THE END, THE PURPOSE OF NUMERICAL APPLICATION IS TO DETERMINE THE AXIAL CAPACITY OF A MASONRY CIRCULAR COLUMN WRAPPED WITH A SIKA WRAP 230C CARBON SHEET.
