THE EFFECTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON IMMIGRANTS, REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION- FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

Abstract
THIS PAPER EXAMINES THE SPECIFIC WAYS IN WHICH IMMIGRANTS, ESP ECIALLY SEASONAL WORKERS, REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS HAVE BEEN AFF ECTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND PRESENTS A VARIETY OF MEASURES TAKEN IN HOST COUNTRIES TO PREVENT AND MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF THE PANDEMIC. IN THIS CONTEXT, WE WILL ANALYZE SPECIFIC SITU ATIONS IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, FOCUSING ON SOME WORRYING SITUATIONS FACED BY THESE CATEGORIES OF PEOPLE. OUR ATTENTION IS DRAWN TOWARDS THE ENTRY RESTRICTIONS IN SOME COUNTRIES THAT PREVIOUSLY ACCEPTED ASYLUM SEEKERS, AS WELL AS THE OBVIOUS AND HIDDEN FORM S OF EXCLUSION OF MIGRANTS FROM THE LABOR MARKET DUE TO RISING UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE EMERGENCE OF NEW FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION.
