VIRTUAL IMMERSION UTILIZATION FOR IMPROVING PERCEPTION OF THE 3D PROTOTYPES

Abstract
VIRTUAL IMMERSION (O R VR) GETS INTO ATTE NTION OF MANY RESEAR CHERS, REGARDLESS OF THEIR ACTIVITY DOMAINS OR INDUSTRY. NOWADAYS, VR IS PRES ENT IN ALMOST ANY DE SIGN STAGE OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT. FOR MORE TH AN TWO DECADES, 3D M ODELLING IN COMPUTER AIDED DESIG N (CAD) HAD PROVIDED A HELP IN THE ANALYS IS OF THE FUTURE ASSEMBLY/PROTOTYPE. HOWEVER, THE CAD -3D SUPPORT PROVED TO HA VE ITS LIMITS, GIVEN THE SCREEN BI -DIMENSIONALITY. AS A N ALTERNATIVE, RAPID PROTOTYPING INTRODUC ES ANOTHER TOOL, 3D -PRINTING, COMPLYING WITH THE NEEDS OF DE SIGNERS, ESPECIALLY IN AUTOMOTIVE FIELD. OF COURSE, LIKE ALL TEC HNOLOGIES, 3D -PRINTING COMES WITH SO ME INCONVENIENCE, AS WE LL: SOME PROPERTIES OF THE ROW MATERIALS , AND ALSO THE LIMITATION OF THE 3D VOLUME OF THE WORKIN G SPACE OF THE 3D -PRINTING MACHINES. BESIDES, VR TECHNOLO GY IS EVEN BETTER KN OWN IN THE ENTERTAIN MENT INDUSTRY, WHERE IT FACILITATES THE I MMERSION IN A VIRTUA L SPACE, AROUND VIRT UAL 3D OBJECTS. NOWADAYS, PDP (PRODU CT DESIGN PROCESS), DEPENDS A LOT ON THI S TECHNOLOGY, IMPROVING AND SHORTE NING THE DESIGN PROC ESS. THIS PAPER PRES ENTS THE ROLE OF VIRTUAL IMMERSION IN THE ANALYSIS PROCESS OF AN AIR CAR PROTOTYPE. T HIS TECHNOLOGY CAN IMPROVE FEATURES LIKE AERODYNAMICS AN D DIMENSIONAL SCALIN G, THUS OPTIMIZING THE PROTOTYPE STRUCTURE IN ORDER TO A PROPER MOUNTING/DISMOUNTING OF ITS PARTS TO BE PERFORMED, ETC. V IRTUAL IMMERSION CO ULD ALSO BE SUCCESSF ULLY USED FOR THE SECONDARY STAGES OF THE PDP: COLORING, E STHETICS AND ERGONOM Y, OR EVEN THE PRODUCT MANEUVERABILITY BY LEFT-HANDED PEOPLE.
