SURGICAL PATIENT S HAVE AN INCREASED RISK FOR VENOUS THROMBOEMBOLISM, THE MOST COMMON PREVENTABLE CAUSE OF DEATH IN THIS CATEGORY OF PATIENTS. THROMBOPROPHYLAXIS WITH MECHANICAL METHODS, SUCH AS INTERMITENT PNEUMATIC LEG COMPRESSION AND GRADUATED COMPRESSION STOCKS, AND ANTICOAGULANT AGENTS, SUCH AS UNFRACTIONED HEPARIN AND LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT HEPARIN ARE COMMONLY USE D TO PREVENT THROMBOSIS,THUS REDUCING MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN THESE PATIENTS.
