THE MANUFACTURING PR OCESS OF GLUE LAMINA TED TIMBER PRESCRIBE S THE DETERMINATION OF WOO D LAMELLA STRENGTH C LASS BEFORE GLUING. THIS OPERATION TAKES PLACE IN GRADI NG MACHINES INTEGRAT ED IN THE FABRICATION TECHNOLO GY. STRESS GRADING MACHI NES DETERMINE THE ST RENGTH CLASS IN FUNC TION OF WOOD SPECIES, DENSITY AND MODULUS OF ELASTICITY IN BENDING OF THE MEASURED LAMELLA. HOWEVER, THIS METHOD IS NOT RECOMMENDED F OR LABORATORY SCALE EXPERIMENTS OR IN CASES WHERE THE SPECI MEN NUMBER IS REDUCE D. THE REASON OF MET HOD REJECTION LAYS IN THE HIGH PRICE AND THE UNEXPLOITED CAPACITY OF THE EQUIPMENT. THE PRESENT STUDY IN TRODUCES THE NON -DESTRUCTIVE METHOD T O CLASSIFY THE WOOD LAMELLA USING THE PLG (PORTABLE LUMBER GRADER) DEVICE DEVELOPED IN THE FACULTY OF WOOD SCIENCES FRO M SOPRON. THE MEASUR ED VALUES ARE COMPAR ED THEREAFTER WITH THE RESULTS OBTAINED BY DESTRUCTIVE METHOD.
