Abstract
THIS PAPER SURVEYS THE HISTORY OF THE RECEPTION OF ”ENGLEZEȘTE FĂRĂ PROFESSOR” (”ENGLISH WITHOUT TEACHER”), THE ONLY DRAMATIC TEXT THAT EUGEN IONESCU WROTE IN ROMANIAN, PINPOINTING, AT THE SAME TIME, SOME ARGUMENTS IN FAVOUR OF ITS AFFILIATION TO THE EUROP EAN AVANT -GARDE MOVEMENT. RECONTEXTUALIZED, AFTER RECOVERING AND PUBLISHING, IN 2008, THE GREATER TEXT THAT IT IS PART OF, ”SCLIPIRI ȘI TEATRU” (”SPARKLES AND THEATRE”), THE PLAY DISCLOSES ITSELF AS A SMALL BIT OF A CRYPTIC COLLAGE, ASSEMBLED IN A MANNER C LOSE TO DADA. ITS CONTROVERSIAL RECEPTION IN ROMANIA MIRRORS THE RELATIVE BELATEDNESS AND DOGMATISM OF OUR LITERARY MILIEU, IN THE COMMUNIST YEARS, UNABLE TO TAKE IN THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE EUROPEAN ARTS. THE PLAY HAS MANY TRAITS REMINDING OF THE DADA-SURREALIST THEATRICAL EXPERIMENTS OF ANDRÉ BRETON, PHILIPPE SOUPAULT, OR TRISTAN TZARA, AND REPRESENTS AN OBVIOUS CONNECTION BETWEEN THE ROMANIAN AND THE FRENCH AVANT -GARDE MOVEMENTS OF THE 1910S -1920S, THAT WILL EVENTUALLY RESULT IN THE THEATRICAL FORM WIDELY APPRAISED AS ”THE THEATRE OF THE ABSURD”. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE TRIPTYCH ”SCLIPIRI ȘI TEATRU” MAY BE CONSIDERED THE TURNING POINT WHERE IONESCU LEAVES BEHIND HIS EARLY COMMITMENT TO THE ELITE OF THE ”YOUNG GENERATION”, IN ORDER TO GET CLOSER TO T HE WRITING AND PERFORMANCE PRACTICES OF THE AVANT-GARDE.
